It’s time to get Back to School Organized

There are several areas we are going to cover in our tips for back-to-school organization guide.

They are divided into categories to help you choose and pick the ones that apply to your family.

For example, if your kids don’t take their lunch to school, then you can skip right over that part.

Also, if you have any organizational tips or hacks that would help out other busy parents, please drop them in the comments below.

It takes a village after all; especially when it’s back to school time.

Back to School Paperwork Organization

Before you jump into an organization frenzy, try printing out our free Back to School Checklist.

It was made to keep track of all those back-to-school to-do’s. However, it would work great to jot down the items below that you are going to organize.

OLD ARTWORK & CRAFTS | Now is the time to go through your home and either store or dispose of last year’s artwork collection. I personally save around five to ten favorites, photograph the rest into a Shutterfly book and then they are pitched.

LAST YEAR’S SCHOOL WORK | At our home when the book bags are cleaned out every night, all paperwork goes into each child’s school bin. That way if something was supposed to go back to school, we haven’t thrown it away.

Now is the time to empty out and start fresh any of last year’s homework that may still be lying around.

PREVIOUS YEAR’S TEACHER INFO | If you have a home binder, folder, planner, or anywhere you keep track of information from your child’s teacher, it’s time to clean it out.

Throw away all the items from the school or teacher that no longer pertain to the upcoming year.

Back to School MomLife Organization

ORGANIZE YOUR PLANNER & CALENDAR | Take the time and put all of the school’s calendar information into your planner. If you have a wall calendar make sure it is up to date as well.

UPDATE YOUR PHONE CALENDAR APP | If electronic calendars are more your thing, go through and update it as well.

EMAILS & PHONE NUMBERS | Make sure that you have the correct phone numbers and email addresses for your child’s teacher and school entered into your phone. That way if an emergency ever did happen, you would have them when you need them.

MEAL PLANNING & RECIPES | Whether you meal plan meticulously or not, go ahead and think of a few meals for the first week of school. Everyone is going to be tired with the adjustment back to school and having easy dinner meals will be a lifesaver.

If you do a meal plan, tidy up your recipes & meal planning supplies so that you have an organized space to work with during the busy school nights.

Back to School Organization of the Homework Supplies

Over the years, I’ve seen some incredible homework stations, kids’ desk set-ups, and unique places prepped for homework time.

However, at our house, it’s done at the kitchen table with their supplies in a wooden divider.

There’s nothing wrong with a fun homework area, but before you spend a lot of time prepping one make sure it will be functional and a place where you can easily assist your child.

Also, it’s a great idea to make sure your homework supplies are organized too. There are fun dividers like this:

Bamboo Rotating Supplies Holder

Or more traditional ones like those below. We use a wooden, 3-section divider from Hobby Lobby, so check home stores for unique options too.

Supplies Organizer Caddy

Clear Supplies Caddy

DRIED-OUT MARKERS | Grab the hundreds of markers around your home and start checking to see if they are dried out. If they are, out they go!

MASSIVE COLLECTION OF BROKEN CRAYONS | Sometimes having too many options can put a halt to homework productivity. So go through your crayon stash and consolidate it down to a manageable number that still gives them lots of options.

You might want to check with your child’s school to see if they take old markers & crayons. Our school accepted them last year and sent them off for a small reward.

GLUE BOTTLES & GLUE STICKS | You guys know the drill by now – lol. Check them and consolidate them to what you are going to need.

POSTER BOARD & CONSTRUCTION PAPER | Check on your collection of poster board and construction paper. After a busy summer spent crafting, these can have dwindled faster than normal.

ORGANIZE & SHARPEN PENCILS | If I could keep track of all the times my boys have sharpened their pencils to put off homework, it would be an astounding number.

However, go ahead and have pencils ready and handy for homework sessions; even if they’ll want to sharpen them again.

Back-to-School Clothing Organization Ideas

HOLEY SOCKS & UNDERWEAR | Go through your child’s sock drawer and pull out any singles that are missing their partner or pairs that no longer fit. Also, do the same for their underwear. Finish up by organizing the drawer so that everything is easily accessible.

CLOTHING | Take the time to organize your child’s closet so that clothing mishaps are avoided during the busy morning rush. Take out any clothes that no longer fit. Box up and store any clothes that are too big, but you are saving for the future. Keep these out of their reach so that it isn’t a morning argument.

A lot of people use hanging closet dividers and set out a week’s worth of outfits. There are several to choose from with 5 dividers, like this one: 5 Shelf Hanging Organizer

Back to School Winter Gear Organization

JACKETS, WINTER COATS & COLD-WEATHER GEAR | Do a quick check to make sure your child has a jacket or hoodie that will fit when the cooler mornings start to arrive. Again, donate or store anything that no longer fits. Taking the option out of their line of sight means getting out the door faster… trust me!

If you live in the Midwest like we do, winter coats are the last thing on your mind when the kids go back to school in the steamy, hot August weather.

But if you’re going to be doing a back-to-school organizational quest, you might as well work on this one too!

Go through last year’s winter coats and donate or pack up ones that no longer fit. If your child is in need of a winter coat, now you’ll know and be able to watch for sales on them in the coming months.

Do a quick check of hats, gloves, mittens, and for those lucky enough to have snow days, the snow suits too.

Back to School Shoe Organization

SHOES, SHOES, EVERYWHERE | The combination of how fast kids’ feet grow combined with how hard they are on shoes results in so many shoes!

Go through and ditch the pairs that are unwearable, clean up any pairs that need a little love, and attempt to organize them.

If you want a great plan for this, check out our How to Organize Kids’ Shoes & Keep them that Way. It has tons of ideas to organize shoes in closets, laundry rooms, mudrooms, and even by the front door.

Kitchen Organization for Back-to-School

Between mad-dash breakfasts, school snacks, and lunch box preparations, the kitchen is the hub for many when it comes to back-to-school time.

Take the time to organize the following items so that you have a streamlined kitchen during those crazy school mornings.

ORGANIZE LUNCHBOXES | If your child has accumulated a collection of lunch boxes over the years, it’s time to organize them. Donate or get rid of old ones that leak, are no longer in use, or your child has outgrown them.

WATER BOTTLES, THERMOS, & UTENSILS | As with the lunchboxes, if you have several extras of these think of consolidating down to what you need to get through a school week. Make sure to dispose of leaking or unused items to remove clutter.

CLEAN OUT THE PANTRY | Do a quick once-over on your pantry or cabinet supplies. Check for expiration dates or items that your family doesn’t like and throw them away.

This is also a good time to jot down what items you are low on so that you can be at full capacity during the first few weeks of school.

Back to School Snack Organization

Take the time and organize the snack section of your pantry or cabinets. These simple ideas will have you starting school on the right foot.

ORGANIZE BAGGIES & REUSABLE CONTAINERS | One of the ways to save money on snacks is to purchase large quantities, and then baggie them up yourself. We do this, especially for chips & goldfish.

So make sure you have the various sizes of baggies you use. Bonus if you go ahead and fill them up with snacks. Double bonus points if you put them in your new snack organizer.

HAVE A SNACK SYSTEM | Whether it be during or after school snacks, having an easy system that your children can help with is a bonus.

Think about setting up a designated school snack container somewhere handy. This way your children know which snacks are available. Then they can help you by putting them in their backpacks.

I’ve seen tons of neat behind-the-door systems that use a shoe organizer. Replace the shoes with snacks and you have an easy snack organizer! We have this one:

Over the Door Shoe Organizer

Clear bins would also work well for organizing snacks, like these:

Clear Storage Bins

Back-to-School Home Organization Tips

A couple of areas that organizing will help when it comes time for back to school:

THE BOOK BAG STATION | This is wherever your child leaves their book bag at night. Ours is a bench heading out the door. During the summer it becomes home to laundry, puzzles, books, and everything else.

Make sure you prep this area since it will be your “landing spot”.  Get it back to being the home for everything that needs to go to school in the morning.

ORGANIZE YOUR MORNING PREP AREA | Think of this area as the place where you keep everything that needs to go out the door with you in the morning. Go through and clean it out of items that may have accumulated over the summer.

CLEAN UP THE HOMEWORK SPOT | Again, tidy up and organize the space that your child uses for their homework. Ours becomes a crafting space during the summer, so the stickers and other distractions need to be hidden away.

Organize your Medical Supplies

Unfortunately, heading back to school can also mean heading back into the germs. That’s why you need to double-check the medical supplies.  This way you are ready for any colds or bugs that make their way into your home.

CHECK INVENTORY & EXPIRATION DATES | Pull out your child’s medicines they use when sick and check all of them for expiration. Make a list of anything you are lacking (fever reducers, allergy, upset tummy, etc.) to purchase.

PREPARE FOR THE WORST | That sounds a little dramatic but preparing for your child, or all your children, or heaven help us yourself, to be sick can be a lifesaver.

Make sure you have Kleenex, and medicine, and maybe even hide some chicken noodle soup somewhere in the pantry.

Back to School Organization of the Car

STOCK IT WITH HAND SANITIZER | In the cupholder on the driver’s side door, our car has a container of hand sanitizer. Whenever the boys get picked up after school, they know to hold their hands out & get a squirt.

Now how will this make your life easier? Well, if it keeps sickness from coming into our home, that makes life much easier.

CLEAN IT OUT | Grab yourself a trash bag, and start tossing those empty sunscreen bottles, popsicle sticks (we don’t even eat popsicles in the car!), and whatever else that has accumulated over the summer.

Now you won’t have items falling out of your car in the pick up or drop off line.

EXTRA OUTFIT | If you have a younger child, go ahead and throw an extra outfit in the car. This way if something happens to their clothes on the way to school, you have a handy change of clothes.

Also, this is great in case the school calls and says your child needs a new set of clothes. It helps you avoid a trip back home to gather up some clothes and lets your child avoid wearing unfamiliar clothes from the nurse.

Tips for Stress Free Back to School Mornings

Does the idea of transitioning back into a routine for the upcoming school year make you a little nervous? Then you definitely need to check out these Tips for Stress Free Back to School Mornings.

I’ve done the math and my boys haven’t had to get up for school in almost six months.

Let’s just say that a few bad, like really bad, habits have become part of our daily routine.

There’s lots of sleeping in late, breakfast is more like brunch, and that’s just to name the biggest two I’m worried about when school starts back up.

So it’s time to get back into a night-time & morning routine and it’s going to be a little tough.

However, these tips for easier school mornings have worked for us before & I’m confident they can work again.

Hopefully, they help your family get out the door on time during those crazy school mornings too!

Night Prep for Stress Free Back to School Mornings

The most important thing you need to know about making those first weeks of back-to-school mornings easier is that it all starts the evening before.

What do I mean? It all begins with the preparations you accomplish the night before the upcoming school day.

I’m a firm believer (and a night owl) so as much as I can get done during the evening, the better our morning will be.

Not only will it have you ready for school the next morning, but you will go to bed without all those “to-do’s” floating around in your head.

Even if you are a morning person, that doesn’t necessarily mean your child is too. Plus, if you implement a night routine, you’ll have more time in the morning for you!

Let’s take a peek at these tips for stress-free back-to-school mornings that rely on evening preparations.

Get the Homework Done the Night Before

Unless your child is busy from the moment they get out of school until they fall asleep that night, finding time to get the homework done at night is a true stress reliever.

Not only does it keep you from rushing to accomplish it in the morning, but it also allows for any “issues” that may arise to be taken care of easier.

It’s much less stressful to search for your construction paper stash or a highlighter when you don’t have the pressure of needing to walk out the door in 15 minutes.

School Papers, Planners, Reading Logs, Oh My!

This one goes right along with the homework theory. Doing it the night before allows you to have more time to prepare anything that’s needed the next day.

It’s also a great idea to check your child’s planner or folder to see how their school day went. A lot of teachers write little notes of positivism or things to work on in these planners.

If there was a note from your child’s teacher, you would want time to discuss it with your child when you aren’t busy heading to school.

Prepare the School Clothes, Shoes, & Book Bag

Even if you are the one who picks out your child’s clothes, doing so the night before is a time-saving idea.

Having a set place where the outfit is located is an even better idea.

This way every morning your child knows where to find their outfit for the day. They can begin changing without bugging you to give them their clothes.

Taking it a step further, in our house we set out clothes, shoes, socks, and coats. The shoes go under a bench, with the socks on top.

Then clothes sit on the bench in front of their book bags. Their coats are behind the bags up against the wall.

We even go as far as to make sure the shoes are untied so that knots don’t stop us in our tracks in the morning.

If you are thinking this sounds like a lot of work for you, make it a part of your child’s bedtime routine. Before they brush their teeth, they collect their clothes, shoes, and book bags and make sure they are placed where they belong.

Everything has a “Spot”… So Keep Everything in it’s Spot

All this simply means is that anything your child, and yourself, need to get out the door in the morning should have a permanent “home” where everyone knows to find it.

For example, you definitely need to have a home for books bags, shoes, outerwear, and lunchboxes if using them.

This way as you are trying to leave the house you don’t have to hear:

“Where’s my book bag?”

or

“I can’t find my water bottle.”

You don’t need a fancy cubby system, just an uncluttered area of your home that can become the designated “get to school on time” command center.

Have Stress Free Back to School Mornings using Notes

I’m not talking about music notes, but any kind of note, post-it, phone reminder, etc. that helps you not forget things during the crazy rush of the morning.

Use sticky notes on the coffee maker to remind yourself to pack the ice pack in the lunch box,

Or set a calendar reminder on your phone that someone needs to take cookies to school for Spirit Day.

Even if you plan and prep the night before, there are always things that need to be done in the morning.

Having a system to “double-check” them will ensure you don’t remember them halfway to school or after your kids are already on the bus.

Prepare Breakfast, Snacks and Lunch

Do as much of your meal prep as you can the night before. In our home, when homework is done and the book bag is being packed up, the last thing my boys do is put their snacks in their bags.

As for lunches, make and prepare as much as possible, storing the entire lunchbox in the fridge if needed. You can always add the ice pack the next morning when you are leaving.

Breakfast can be made easier during those first few weeks of school by having your child’s favorites in the house. Sometimes switching tummies that might have slept in all summer to eating a good breakfast earlier can be difficult.

Having favorite breakfast items can encourage them to eat and have full bellies during the school day.

One of my keys to having stress-free back-to-school mornings is to not push or worry over breakfast.

Having handy items such as muffins, bagels, fruit, or granola bars during the first few weeks of school is a good transition to eating a fulfilling breakfast for the rest of the school year.

Breakfast Prep Helps Too

There are a few items that are super easy to meal prep and freeze, or simply have on hand for busy school mornings. Three easy favorites in my house are pancakes, waffles, and scrambled eggs.

Make a huge batch of these on the weekend and you will have quick breakfast ideas to pull on those crazy school mornings.

Keep your Evenings as free of events as possible

As I write this, I’m fully aware that once school starts back up we will have 2 kids in soccer and 1 playing fall baseball.  Our evenings will be crazy busy. But there are ways to free up your evenings a bit those first back-to-school days.

First, you can cut out any extras you want. For example, we stop swim lessons the week before school starts.

If your child is dragging and barely keeping their eyes open, you can ask their music instructor to skip a week of lessons. Or you can let their dance instructor know they need a break and are skipping a class.

As my boys have gotten older, the transition back to school hasn’t been nearly as tiring. But those kindergarten and first grade years they were exhausted at the end of a school day.

Of course, with school starting back up our weeknight movie adventures, swimming until dark, and eating at 9 pm has to adjust too. All these little things will help keep your child rested and ready when that alarm clock rings in the morning.

Get yourself to bed on time for a Stress Free Back to School Morning

I know, I know there are a hundred things that I just suggested to prep the night before. But it can all be done and you can get yourself to bed on time.

Making sure you have plenty of good sleep can only help with the adjustment of the kids heading back to school. Crabby kids who don’t want to wake up is more than enough crankiness in the house.

Ensuring you have had good sleep, will hopefully set the mood for your stress-free back-to-school mornings.

Morning Prep for Stress Free Back to School Mornings

You’ve done as much as possible the night before, but there are still tons of mom hacks and tips to help during the mornings too.

Let’s start with this night-owl’s least favorite…

Wake Up Before Your Kids

I will admit that I used to roll my eyes at this one. But there is a lot to be said about waking up and starting your day without little ones underfoot.

Still, I am a slacker with this one, but the days I do manage it, it makes a world of difference. Waking up to a quieter house can set the tone for the rest of your day.

Take the time to get yourself ready and prepare what you need for your day to be productive. Just generally enjoy a few moments of reflection and hot coffee if you prefer.

Keeping the Morning Chill and Relaxed

No matter how much preparation you have done, there are going to be lost shoes, missing binders, and someone is going to not get the exact amount of syrup they like on their pancakes.

You set the tone for the morning, so make sure you keep it chill as your family adjusts to all the new back-to-school expectations.

Mentally prepare yourself for tired kids who wouldn’t normally get upset about their muffins falling to the floor. Or that their sibling is putting on their clothes. Yes, we’ve had this one in our home before.

During those first few weeks give some grace. Lead your child to solve the problem without being anxious or rushing. Avoid saying:

“I don’t know where it is but you were supposed to put it in your book bag last night and we’re leaving in 3 minutes so you need to find it.”

Yep, I’ve said that one on a crazy school morning when my husband was out of town and we were rushing to get out the door.

Kids are not only physically tired after heading back to school, but they are mentally strained too. Remembering this during the transition to something new can help keep your mornings calmer and more relaxed.

Set a “No Electronics” Rule

On the very first day, set an electronics rule that works for your family. In our house, you have to be one hundred percent ready to walk out the door before electronics go into your hands.

If you set this from day one, you won’t be battling, as much, when you are trying to get your kids to put away the tablets and eat breakfast.

Give yourself a little Extra Time

First, you are going to need extra time on the First Day of School for all those mandatory pictures! But after that, giving yourself extra time is an easy way to cushion the transition back to school.

In our home, rushing and running late are definitely going to stop us from having a stress-free back-to-school morning.

As the school year goes on, you might be able to shave this time off of your morning routine. But having a cushion during those first few weeks is a good idea.

Start working on a Morning Routine

If kids know what to expect, they are more likely to go along with it and be helpful in accomplishing it.

Set a morning routine that works well for your family and stick to it.

For example, in our house, it is a simple routine, but one my boys know by heart:

Wake Up

Eat Breakfast

Brush Teeth

Clothes & Shoes On

Check Backpack & Snack

Load Up!

It’s nothing life-altering, but it keeps us on track and getting out the door on time… most days.

Post a Morning Routine

Even if your morning routine is simple like ours, a written schedule can still be helpful. It never hurts to post it or have it somewhere centrally located in the house.

You can write the time and what needs to be done by then and your morning schedule is done.

In the past, I have used a typed-up schedule. It was always at our bar where a lot of our morning activities took place.

However, with my youngest starting school, and unable to read, he is going to need a visual schedule.

Visual Schedule for Stress Free Back to School Mornings

If you love the idea of a morning routine but have younger children you might want to create a visual schedule. These don’t necessarily have times but have pictures to represent the steps of your morning routine.

You could draw sunshine for waking up, food for breakfast, a toothbrush for teeth, clothes & shoes, and finally a backpack.

20+ Tips to Make Back to School Mornings Less Stressful

Give Kids’ Responsibilities

There is nothing wrong with giving your kids a few extra responsibilities in the morning hours.

You could have your kids be in charge of putting the ice packs in lunchboxes. Or maybe an older child could tie a younger sibling’s shoes.

Another good one is being in charge of cleaning up the kitchen a bit.

Divide and Conquer the Morning Tasks

Along with giving your children some morning tasks and responsibilities, dividing these with your partner can be helpful too. For example, in our house, my husband makes everyone breakfast. That is his morning “role”.

Then while he is getting ready for work, I am in charge of the kids’ morning routine. Things like brushing teeth, clothes and shoes, and backpack duty.

We both know our roles and they work to get us out of the house on time.

Have an Oh No! We Slept In Plan

Let’s be honest… sometimes even with all the planning, there are going to be those mornings. The ones where you are running around late like the family in Home Alone.

Having a plan for these days can’t take the stress of them away. But it can make it easier to survive.

So make sure you have thought of what would happen if you do sleep through those alarms.

Can someone work from home that day? Do you have a neighbor that could run your kids to school with theirs?

Do you have grandparents close to your home?  Could they do the school bus stop or drop-off so you can get ready for work?

Think of all possible plans of action. This way when it does happen, you know your options to get caught back up in your day.

One more idea for Stress Free Back to School Mornings

There are so many great tips and ideas that will help you make your school mornings easier. However, this next one is the one that has made several school years easier for me.

Are you ready,? Because it’s all about organizing your life.

Stay with me, it will be worth it!

Organize your House, Planner, & Life in General

I’m not saying you need to go full Marie Kondo on your entire life. But a little organizing can go a long way in making your mornings easier.

Organize your planner or phone app with the school calendar so dates don’t sneak up on you.

Take stock and de-clutter your kitchen. Especially check and get rid of old lunchboxes and water bottles. Also, make sure you have all those back-to-school items like baggies and containers handy.

Possibly set up a school-approved snack station. A simple bin or basket full of your child’s favorite snacks will do.

Go through your child’s clothes and organize them so you have what you need and pack away the rest.

Organizing your home can feel like a never-ending task, but breaking it up into smaller parts helps.

You’ll be thankful you did when your mornings are running smoother.

Let’s look at this scenario. You’re standing at the Target Checkout with several gift cards in hand, proud of yourself for knocking out those teacher appreciation gifts early this year.

But… you overhear a mom in the Dollar Spot talking about how she gave Amazon gift cards last year as teacher Christmas gifts and the teachers raved about it.

Hmm. Do all the teachers you are buying for shop at Target? Would they enjoy a gift from somewhere else?

I mean, everyone loves Target! Right?

This is when having the Teacher Appreciation Gift Questionnaire printable can save the day. You’ll have tons of information about the teacher’s favorite things easily available.

How to use the Questionnaire

The process of using the Teacher Appreciation Gift Questionnaire is really simple.

All you need to do is give it to your child’s teacher and ask them to fill it out.

See! Easy-peasy!

You could give it to them at your Back to School Night. Or you could send it with your child on the First Day of School.

It would even work to send it to them leading up to teacher appreciation week.

If you are planning on using it for only Christmas time, you might want to take a peek at our Christmas Teacher Questionnaire. It’s very similar, just has a total Christmas theme!

After you’ve given the questionnaire to your child’s teacher all you need to do is wait. That is wait for your child’s teacher to fill it out and give it back to you.

When to use the Teacher Appreciation Gift Questionnaire

Now that you have a list of the teacher’s favorite things, you can plan your gift-giving accordingly.

For example, you can pair together their favorite drink and snack to send in during Teacher Appreciation Week.

Or you can purchase that Christmas gift in confidence knowing that they do love to shop at Target.

Perhaps while you are visiting the school you notice your child’s classroom is in dire need of something. Knowing that your child’s teacher uses Walmart for classroom supplies, you can send in a gift card to help a little.

We all know that teachers spend a lot of their own money on supplies. So a five-dollar gift card with a little note saying “Thanks” can really help a teacher with supplies.

The most common colors have six cars to cross off. The more difficult colors like pink, purple, and orange only have three.

The game was designed for the winner to be the one who crosses off all of their cars first. If only one child wishes to play, then the goal would be to cross off all the cars before you arrive at your destination.

Of course, you can always come up with other fun ways to play the game too.

Ways to Make the Printable Travel Game for Kids More Fun

For example, you could make it where you have to do a hash mark.

Make the rules so that the more common colors of cars have to be found five, ten, or even twenty times.

This will help keep the game flowing while you search for those elusive orange, pink, or purple cars.

Or you could switch from using the colors of cars to finding colors you see only on the sides of eighteen-wheel trucks or license plates.

How to Print Your Road Trip Printable Game for Kids

This free printable car game is available as a PDF. Because of this, you will have to use a program that can open PDFs, such as Adobe.

Feel free to print several copies for your travels. You might consider printing enough for playing the game on the way to your destination and on your way home.

Here’s the Printable

To print out your Car Color Search Roadtrip Printable Game for Kids, click on the link below.

Make sure your printer has color printing turned on so the cars print out colorful. This is especially important for children who can’t read yet.

Before you get your worksheet, check out our free printable United States Map for Kids. It’s perfect for use with the license plate game on road trips.

Also, you might consider laminating the travel game instead of printing several copies. I use these self-adhesive laminating sheets.

Once laminated, your child can use dry-erase markers to play the game over & over again.

There you go! Hopefully, your road trip with kids is a little bit smoother with a fun game to keep them entertained. Well, for at least some of the drive time!

Fun Outdoor Water Activities for Kids in Your Community

Most of these ideas are geared toward staying cool and having fun at home in the backyard. They don’t require a ton of set-up or complicated plans to accomplish your summer fun.

You can find a ton of DIY water play ideas on our Summer Time Pinterest Board if you want to check more of those out.

But before we jump into all the ways to have fun at home, don’t forget about your local resources for cooling off in the summertime.

Sometimes it’s nice to have a place in mind for when you aren’t in the mood to drag out the blow-up pool and fill up all those water balloons for your backyard water fun.

Water Fun Away from Home

Check in your town, or surrounding communities, and see what water activities are available for kids to keep cool in the summer months. Ideas might include:

Water Parks

Splash Pads

Community Pools

Local Lakes

Creeks

If your community doesn’t have a pool, check with your local campground. Our closest one allows community members to purchase day passes during the week since their occupancy is lower.

Also, you could check with local hotels that have pools. One of the hotels near us allows swimming for a monetary fee.

You could likely be told no, but it never hurts to ask and see if it means having a place to swim and cool off.

Fun Outdoor Water Activities for Kids at Home

Hopefully, you’ll find a few fun ideas and ways to keep your kids cool this summer. There’s everything from new water play ideas to the tried and true classics.

Every community seems to have different rules while going through the coronavirus pandemic, but social distancing & frequent closings of places for kids to exert some energy is the new normal.

That’s where having a few fun water activities for your kids comes in super handy.

These suggestions work well for kids of all ages from toddlers to tweens. Also, a lot of these will work well with children who are non-swimmers.

Do you have a tried and true water activity you do at home that we could add to our list? Drop it in the comments below so we can share it with other mamas trying to survive this historic summer at home.

Water Fun at Home

1) Have a Water Balloon Fight

2) Play in the Sprinkler

3) Play Sponge Toss using a huge sponge

4) Have your kids help you wash your car (this will turn into a hose fight)

5) Have a Kiddie Car Wash – let your child wash all their outside toys

6) Play Catch the Water Balloon on Your Head in a Strainer

7) Have a water gun fight

8) Set up a sprinkler under your trampoline – note, that this will be very slippery!

9) Make or purchase a Water Blob

10) Play in a Water Table

Even More Water Fun at Home

11) Play Water Balloon Piñata Game – simply hang water balloons and go for it!

12) Play Water Balloon Baseball – hit the water balloon and use other balloons to try and throw out the runner

13) Slip ‘N Slide – purchase one or make your own with a tarp

14) Play Toss the Loofah

15) Let your kids chisel away at frozen animals “stuck” in a chunk of ice – freezing in an old milk jug with the top cut-off works well.

16) Have a “Who can Shoot Farther” contest using Water Shooters

17) Purchase an Inflatable Water Playset

18) Save your plastic containers (think water bottles) and poke holes in them. Fill them up and explore the homemade sprinklers.

19) Play Water Balloon Golf – yes the balloon doesn’t go far, but kids will love trying to pop it!

20) Make a River – Use aluminum foil, fold up the sides, and add water to try and make things (leaves, blades of grass, cut up pool noodles, etc.) float down-river

20) Fill up the blowup pool or kiddie pool and have a blast – keep reading for more tips on this!

How to take Your Inflatable Pool play to the Next Level

If I’ve learned anything from my years as a mom, and a teacher too, it’s sometimes the everyday items that completely enthrall kids.

For example, think of the common joke about toddlers playing more with the boxes than the toys they receive as gifts.

I’ve found as kids grow, this can still ring true. Here is a list of common items that my kids have played with in our blowup pool. Most of these items can be purchased at your local Dollar Tree or simply swiped from your kitchen cabinets.

Plastic Cups

Colanders

Medicine “Squirters”

Turkey Baster

Pitchers

Plastic Bowls

Loofahs

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Fun Outdoor Water Toys for Kids

There are hundreds of water games and activities that will ensure your kids have a great time outside.

These however sometimes take a lot of preparation for already busy parents.

That’s why there’s nothing better, and easier on mom, than having some fun water toys to quickly use right at home.

These ideas are some of the best backyard outdoor water toys for kids. This means you don’t even have to leave your home to keep summer boredom at bay.

There’s no driving to the local pool or prepping a fun water game the night before.

It’s just simple, easy water fun in your backyard.

Let’s jump right in and look at some of the best water toys for summer this year.

Water Fun at Home

Unlike water games, most of these water toys allow you to “set them up and play” without a lot of planning.

In other words, these ideas are great for last-minute water playtime.

Let’s start with a classic that my boys have loved every summer – the blowup pool!

INFLATABLE POOLS

Do you guys remember the hard plastic pools from the 80’s? Well, pools have come a long way since those heavy monstrosities of our childhood.

Current designs of pools can be easily taken down and dried out. Or there are hacks, like covering the pool with a fitted sheet, to keep it usable for more than a day.

Inflatable pools like the one below can also be purchased fairly inexpensively.

If you have a little one, these smaller pools are great for helping them cool off.

WET INFLATABLE BOUNCERS

Do you remember what I was talking about with those heavy pools from our childhood? Well, we didn’t have anything like these wet inflatables!

I put off purchasing one of these for several years because of first, the cost. Even catching them on sale they can cost a pretty penny.

Second, I assumed the setup would be horrendous.

The cost was a little hard to swallow, but when you think about how many years of use you will get out of the inflatable, it’s easier to handle.

The setup and takedown of these types of inflatables aren’t that bad. The worst part, in my opinion, is making sure the inflatable is completely dry before storing it.

This is the water inflatable we have and I can say that it has given us four years of summer of fun and is still going strong.

Another one that my friends had is this Costzon Inflatable Slide Bouncer & they gave it rave reviews as well.

SLIP ‘N SLIDES

First, there is nothing wrong with a good long tarp and some baby soap to create a perfect homemade slip ‘n slide!

Mom tip – Using the tear-free baby soap on any slip ‘n slide will ensure you don’t have red-eyed, crying children.

At least from soap in their eyes. As a mom of three young boys collision tears are going to happen.

Of course, there are lots of options if you’d rather purchase a slip ‘n slide. We have owned several over the years and our favorites were the ones with large pools at the end, like the TEAM MAGNUS Slip ‘n Slide.

This is a super long & durable slip ‘n slide with the pool at the end.

SPRINKLERS

When it comes to water activities for kids that are easy to set up, sprinklers might be the easiest.

Attach the hose, crank it on, and watch your kids have a blast.

Now if you want to step up your sprinkler game, check the following ideas out.

First is a Unicorn Sprinkler!

If unicorns aren’t your jam, they also make this awesome Inflatable Dinosaur Sprinkler.

And if that doesn’t make you excited, check out this Trampoline Sprinkler

A little bit of advice if you have never added water to your trampoline. It can make it very slippery.

I would attempt wetting your trampoline for your kids and see how that goes before spending money on a trampoline waterpark.

WATER GUNS

First, if you have Fortnite-playing children then you need to check out the NERF Fortnite Rl Super Soaker Water Blaster.

Of course, there are tons of other water gun options; but the Fortnite ones rank top in my home right now.

WATER TABLES

Another fun idea for smaller children is to invest in a good water table. Some children don’t enjoy the feel of a big pool, so having an option like this next to your pool is a great way to keep everyone entertained.

You can find a simple water table, like this Little Tikes Frog Pond Water Table.

Of course, there are lots of other options that increase the accessories, but also the price. For example, this super fun Little Tikes Fountain Factory Water Table.

They make water tables for kids in all kinds of themes and sizes! So make sure you check out all the options for fun Water Tables

UNIQUE & FUN ACTIVITIES FOR BORED TWEENS @ HOME

FUN OUTDOOR WATER ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS THIS SUMMER

If pools and sprinklers are already in your water play stash, then these unique ideas might be just what you are looking for this summer.

The first one you have probably seen hundreds of DIY tutorials on Pinterest on how to make them. I have attempted to make a water blob and it was an epic fail.

If you aren’t looking to make a DIY water blob, you can purchase them already made, like this Sun Squad Rainbow Mat.

Another fun idea is this BANZAI Grand Slam Baseball Water Slide.

We own this super fun baseball slide and the boys love playing a game and sliding around on it.

Finally, this one just might be my boys’ absolute favorite – Bunch O Balloons Water Balloons.

You can purchase just the balloons and they are a sore-finger, time-saving wonder of this world. But this slingshot takes the fun to the next level!

There you go! Tons of outdoor water toys for kids! Hopefully, you found something on this list to help your kids stay cool, while still having fun this summer!

Homemade Father’s Day Gift

There’s always something extra special about a homemade gift for the holidays. The presents that always steal my heart include kids’ drawings and their answers to fun questions.

That’s why this Father’s Day questionnaire is going to become a tradition in our home. There is a space for your kids to draw a portrait of Dad; or a picture of them with Dad doing something they love.

Plus, there are a few simple questions to answer as well. Unlike other Father’s Day fill-ins, this works really well for young children who haven’t mastered their writing skills just yet.

The easy questions let them focus on drawing and not stress over needing to write out several answers.

How to use the printable Father’s Day fill-in coloring page

This printable can be used in several ways to celebrate Dad this Father’s Day.

First, you can simply print the PDF, fill it out, and give it to Dad as a coloring page. I recommend using card stock for this option so that the coloring page is sturdier and will hold up better.

If you want to preserve the gift, laminating it is an option. You don’t need a laminator to accomplish this, single lamination sheets can be purchased at Target or Walmart.

Another idea is to frame the coloring page and present it to Dad. This way, you could also change out the artwork every year.

Here’s your Father’s Day Printable for Kids

This is available only as a PDF and is printable right from home. Simply click on the link below and options to print should pop up.

Feel free to use the PDF for any personal uses; or for teachers wishing to use it in the classroom. No commercial use is allowed.

Also, if you have a golf-loving Dad in your house, take a peek at our DIY Golf Gift for Dad idea! It’s super easy and another personalized gift idea too.

Watermelon Fun Summer Bucket List Printable

After many summers home with my boys, I have learned that I need to have a place to organize all of our fun summer activities and plans.

When the chorus of “We’re bored!” or even better “We have nothing to do!” comes your way, having a Summer Bucket List to pull ideas from is a life-saver.

Of course, making it a blank summer bucket list printable that you can fill in with ideas that are perfect for your family helps too.

I’ve tried printing off summer bucket list idea sheets before and several ideas just didn’t work for our family. For example, we don’t have an aquarium near us and my oldest spent an entire summer pointing to it and asking when we could go. Oops!

Make your Own Summer Bucket List

That’s why being able to make your own summer bucket list can make life a little bit easier.

We have a post full of ideas to Keep Kids Busy this Summer. It’s geared towards older kids, like Tweens ages 8 to 12, but has ideas many ages can enjoy. It would be great to pull ideas from your bucket list.

Also, you can check out tons of summer bucket list idea posts on our Pinterest Bucket List Board. Use these lists to grab ideas that work for your family and forget about the others.

Another great idea to fill up your list is to ask friends for suggestions.  A Facebook post or simple text just might let you in on fun things to do in your area.

These could be festivals, carnivals, or farmers markets that are only available for a limited time. Or playgrounds, splash pads, and state parks that work great for day trips.

Summer Bucket List Ideas

The best part about summer is that there are so many outside activities and events to enjoy and add to your bucket list.

If you want a few quick summer fun ideas, here are a few of my kids’ favorites. It includes several ideas that work at home which is perfect for this unique social-distancing summer.

  • Have a water balloon fight
  • Make homemade popsicles
  • Play on a slip-N-slide
  • Roast Marshmallows
  • Catch Fireflies
  • Make homemade pizzas
  • Nighttime Hide-Go-Seek
  • Rock painting
  • Make Slime
  • Camp out in the living room or backyard
  • Dance in the rain
  • Watch an outdoor movie

The end of the school year is always such a crazy busy time. While balancing all the end-of-the-year chaos, there are still tons of ways for kids to celebrate the start of summer break.

These ideas can work for kids of all ages from preschoolers to kindergarteners to even middle schoolers. Honestly, I’m pretty sure even high schoolers will still enjoy an ice cream treat on the last day of school.

Hopefully one of these fun ways to Celebrate the Last Day of School will work for your family. Keep reading for lots of activities to make the end of the school year a special time!

Fun Ways for Kids to Celebrate the Last Day of School

Even though all the field trips, play days, award ceremonies, graduations, and paper piles have you exhausted to the point of tears, you want to make the last day of school special for your kids.

If you’re running short on energy & time then you need the last day of school activities that are easy to pull off. It doesn’t hurt if they are easy on the checkbook too. Especially with all the craziness going on in the world right now.

Keep scrolling to see all of our favorite ideas and activities to make the last days of school special for your kids. Hopefully one or two will work perfectly for your family.

The Big List of Ways to Celebrate the End of the School Year

There are so many fun ways to celebrate another school year ending. This list was created by a tired Mama who barely survived “Maycember” so most of these activities are simple, but yet your kids will still love them.

We do several of the activities listed below each year, and they have almost turned into the Last Day of School Traditions in our home. To the point, if we don’t do them, my boys seem to notice and request them.

So pick a fun activity below and start creating memories and maybe even a new family tradition along the way!

MAKE A SUMMER BUCKET LIST

This is one of our family traditions that we do every year on the last day of school.

We brainstorm fun (and doable) ideas that we want to do for the summer. Then we pick our first one off that list, which typically involves ice cream, and do it that evening.

If you want a free summer bucket list, with a fun watermelon theme, click here to see our latest printable. It’s blank so you can fill in the bucket list items that work best for your family.

TAKE A LAST DAY OF SCHOOL PORTRAIT

Another fun way to celebrate the Last Day of School is to take a picture using a fun Last Day of School sign! We have a free printable Last Day of School Sign for grades preschoolers through seniors that would work perfectly.

It is one of my favorite things to look at the differences in my boys between the start of the school year and the end. They seem to grow so much in that short time.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL SELF-PORTRAIT PRINTABLE

Admittedly, drawings are incredibly hard for me to throw away. Not the coloring book pages, those disappear magically with ease.

But the drawings that my kids creatively do are some of my favorite keepsakes. That’s how this Last Day of School Self Portrait Activity became a tradition in our family. It’s a fun activity for the kids and a great souvenir to hold onto as well.

CELEBRATE THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL WITH AN ICE CREAM CELEBRATION

Do you have a favorite ice cream shop? Today is the day to start summer off right and go enjoy its sugary goodness.

Or if you want to skip the expensive ice cream places, head to your local grocery store and go crazy in the ice cream aisle. Or go for vanilla and serve up all kinds of crazy toppings!

It’s actually about the same price, if not cheaper to buy whole containers of ice cream. Plus, you’ll have ice cream treats for several summer days, not just the last day of school.

last day school activities ice cream pin image 20a

WATER BALLOON ATTACK

Nothing says “Welcome to Summe”r more than a water balloon attack!

If your kids come home on the bus, have the balloons ready and begin the surprise attack as they make their way home.

If you pick your kids up, you could still have the balloons prepared and let the fun begin when you get home.

FILL OUT A LAST-DAY-OF-SCHOOL INTERVIEW PRINTABLE

There are tons of these floating around Pinterest. Find one that you love, there are a few on our School Pinterest Board, and print it out!

If you don’t have a way to keep your child’s important school papers, certificates, and artwork organized, think about simply placing them in their yearbook.

You could tape it to an empty page, or slip in a sheet protector & store it that way. The same goes for the Last Day of School self-portrait!

CELEBRATE THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL IN THE WATER

The end of the school year here in the Midwest means hotter days and fun in the sun! There’s no better way to start celebrating that than to enjoy some water time.

Head to a local lake, beach, or pool to start your summer with a splash, or make your own fun in the water at home. You could set up the sprinkler, do water balloons, water gun fights, or even use a small blow-up pool to get your summer started right.

GO ON AN OUTSIDE ADVENTURE

If the weather isn’t warm enough for water fun, pick another outside activity to entertain your kids. You could go for a hike at a local State Park or take a bike ride down a trail.

If bikes aren’t your thing, do a “park hop” around town. This simply means you visit as many of the parks as you can until you run out of daylight or energy.

Pack up a special snack or picnic for supper before heading out to your favorite spot.

GO ON A DOLLAR STORE SHOPPING SPREE

Want to kill two birds with one stone? Take your kids on a frugal trip to the Dollar Store to stock up on summer supplies.

You can find everything from chalk, bubbles, pool toys, and bug catchers to name a few in their summer section.

Also, it’s a great time to stock up on fun inside activities for those super hot or really rainy summer days. Check out their coloring and activity books, puzzles, and craft supplies.

We always buy a ton of large poster board when we are there too. It would be perfect to use for making a BIG bucket list as we mentioned above!

INVITE FRIENDS OVER FOR THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FUN

If you are daring -wink- you can let your kids invite friends over to help you celebrate the last day of school.

If you don’t want to leave the house,  make it a fun movie and popcorn night; a backyard campout; or just let the kids pick what they want to do. Sometimes their ideas are the best!

HIT UP ONE OF YOUR CHILD’S FAVORITE PLACES

You have a lot of summer days and nights to keep your kids entertained, but there are always those few places that your kids are willing to go to unlimited times.

For us, it’s playing Putt-Putt! We could play it every day and they would never turn down the chance to go.

Other ideas could be water parks, arcades, fun gaming restaurants, trampoline parks, splash pads, conservation areas, and more!

PLAN A SPECIAL FAMILY DINNER

There are so many ways you can make the Last Day of School Dinner something that your kids won’t want to miss.

You could have the family make dinner together. Recipes like homemade pizza and taco bars are two of our favorite family dinners we all work on together.

Another way to make it special is to eat somewhere you normally wouldn’t. You could have a picnic in the backyard, or eat on blankets in the living room while watching a movie.

Hopefully, you have found some fun ideas to make the last day of school fun for your kiddos! Let me know in the comments below if you have something special you do for your child. I’d love to add it to the post and share it with others.

Last Day of School Self Portrait Printable

The last month of school can be a crazy busy time for moms.

Between field trips, concerts, graduations, and field days ( just to name a few), life can seem impossible to keep up with.

That’s why this printable is designed to be an easy, click-and-print activity for your child.

There’s very little prep work, but you’ll still end up with a great memory from your child’s last day of school.

Tips on Using the Printable

Considering the uniqueness of this year, this self-portrait worksheet is perfect for documenting how different the year has been.

For example, your child can draw themself at home on paper instead of at school. Encourage them to maybe draw your home in the background or your family pet. They might even surprise you and draw themself wearing a mask.

If your child doesn’t love to draw, you could encourage them to write something about themself in the circle. They could write words that describe their school year or entire paragraphs.

You could also snap a photo of your child and cut it to fit inside the circle too!
