Magic Elf Moving Tongs for your Elf on the Shelf

Elf on the Shelf Magic Tongs

It’s the season of Elf on the Shelf and that means funny Elf antics. However, it also means an Elf who sometimes ends up being in the way. That’s where these Magic Elf Moving Tongs can save the day.

Why you need to make Magic Elf Moving Tongs

It never seems to fail that the Elf winds up somewhere that really makes him “in-the-way”.

If I you are needing to use your mixer, there he is sitting in front of it. Or he is lounging on the stack of Christmas books and someone is begging to read them.

Perhaps you have the rule that adults can move the Elf on the Shelf, as long as they don’t use their hands.

This means using kitchen tongs, two forks, a spatula, chopsticks or any other kitchen utensil in your arsenal. Perhaps, as my boys do, your children watch intently as you gingerly squeeze him and move him to his new resting spot.

NERVOUS KIDDOS WHEN YOU MOVE THE ELF

Now my boys were still very skeptical about the random choice of items to move our Elf. This is how the Magic Elf Moving Tongs came to exists.

I thought if there was something specific for moving the Elf, then perhaps the kids wouldn’t be so nervous.

The best part is that making Magic Elf on the Shelf Tongs isn’t expensive. Plus it doesn’t require a great deal of DIY skills.

Keep reading to see how to make a pair for your home. You’ll never have to wonder how to move your Elf on the Shelf without touching it again!

How to move your Elf on the Shelf without Touching Him

You really only need two things to make these tongs for moving your Elf. Obviously you need a pair of tongs, and then a few fun Elf on the Shelf or Christmas stickers.

These Betty Crocker Salad Tongs are the perfect red color. Last year they were even available at the Dollar Tree.

I think these clear tongs would look super cute covered in stickers too!

Now, all you have to do to make your tongs magical is to put on the stickers. You now have your own pair of Magic Elf Moving Tongs. The best part is that it will only cost you the price of the tongs, plus the price of the stickers.

If you are worried about the stickers not staying on your tongs, simply coat them lightly with clear Mod Podge. Or if you are feeling super festive, they make glitter Mod Podge too!

How to Introduce your Elf on the Shelf Tongs

First, you will need some way to let your children know that using the tongs to move the Elf is perfectly fine.

You could have your Elf bring the magic tongs to your home one night. You could even add a note from Santa explaining that they are safe to use.

Whatever you do, make sure you stress that it is perfectly fine for adults to move the Elf with the tongs, not children.

This will prevent your Elf from being carried around your home daily!

When to Use your Tongs

You can use the tongs anytime you need to move your Elf on the Shelf.

These are great for when your Elf on the Shelf has had a mishap. For example, if your kids wake up and he is on the ground under the helicopter instead of inside of it.

Or maybe you are traveling for the Holidays and want to take your Elf with you? Use your tongs and place him in the car for your travel adventures.

Hopefully having a way to move your Elf will make life just a little bit easier.

An Easy STEM Activity for Kids

The importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Activities has flourished in the last few years.

The best part about STEM activities is that they are truly hands-on learning experiences. While some of them require ingredients and a long list of instructions, this activity does not.

That’s what makes it not only a fun activity for kids but a frugal one too.

We have another fun STEM activity, it’s our “Christmas Catch” Math Game that works great for holiday classroom fun, or as a Christmas Party Game.

Pair it with this Spice Drop STEM Activity & you have your games & activities all set for a holiday party!

Spice Drop STEM Activity as a Classroom Game

Last year I was in charge of my third grader’s Christmas party. We did the “Christmas Catch” Game, and then this Spice Drop Activity.

The entire class of energetic, almost-Christmas-Break-Crazy-kids stayed so focused while working on this!

If you are looking for a fun Christmas classroom party game, this would be a great option.

So how do you set up the activity for classroom party fun? It’s super easy too!

SPICE DROP STEM ACTIVITY SET UP

The setup for doing the Spice Drop STEM Activity as a classroom party activity is very simple.

You can use brown paper lunch bags as containers and simply place the toothpicks and spice drops in the bag together.

Putting the toothpicks in first works best, because then they don’t poke the kids as they first reach in to get their supplies.

Of course, you could individually hand out the spice drops and toothpicks at the party, but using the bags is a time saver.

Once you have your bags full, fold over the bags to minimize spillage, and set-up is done.

Now spice drops do have a sugar coating, so you might want to bring paper plates for the children to work on to minimize the mess.

WAYS TO ENCOURAGE THE CHILDREN’S BUILDING

So there are several options, depending on the age of the children, as to how you can go forward with this Spice Drop activity.

First, you could simply give the children their supplies and see what their imaginations let them create.

Or, you could have the tallest Spice Drop Building Competition. This one seems to keep their interests as they work to build high, but strong structures.

Another fun idea is to have them make a certain item such as a Christmas tree, bridge, or even animals.

TEAMWORK WITH STEM ACTIVITIES

Building projects are great for having children work in pairs, or groups, to accomplish larger tasks. You could have them work together from the very beginning to do any of the above suggestions.

Or, you could have them attempt to connect their structures at a certain point during the activity and see what they create.

Doing the Spice Drop STEM Activity at Home

Beyond the classroom, this game is super easy & fun to do at home as well.

If you need to cook the Christmas pies, make that super intricate appetizer you are now regretting, or even just scroll through Pinterest for a bit, this activity will hopefully give you some time to do those things.

My boys were so into this that they even took their buildings to the floor to add some Star Wars figures too.

Supplies Needed for Activity

You only need spice drops & toothpicks to have a great time with this STEM Activity at home.

However, if you want a Christmas game or activity, these red and green spice drops are perfect.

If you are planning on doing this for a large group of children, I highly recommend using bags & plates to keep things a bit more organized.

Easy Christmas Sorting Activity for Kids

Red divided platter with Christmas color pompoms

Simple Christmas Sorting Activity for Kids

While creating a fun Christmas Catch game for my tween’s classroom party, it’s fair to say that my home was a messy version of Santa’s workshop!

Bows were mixing with pom-poms, along with stickers, jingle bells, and brown pipe cleaners that never made it into antlers.

My boys were all home and helping me figure out the logistics for the game.

After several rounds of “Don’t dump that please!” & “Don’t mix those!” I gave in to the chaos and they went to town exploring the Christmas items.

That’s how the idea came to create this simple Christmas Sorting Activity was created. Keep reading for the easy steps to create your activity.

From Chaos to Learning by Sorting

When it was time to clean up the mess they had made my oldest said, “Let’s sort them.” Lightbulb moment! How easy this was going to be for them to not only clean up their mess but do a little learning too.

Supplies for Christmas Sorting Activity

To create your own Christmas Sorting Activity you will only need a few simple items.

First, you will need something to sort the items in, like this red divided platter from The Dollar Store. Or you could set out bowls, cups, paper plates, etc. Truly anything that the kids can keep the items separated in will work.

Next, are the small Christmas items such as tiny bows, pompoms, jingle bells, holiday erasers, or tiny packages.

That is it for supplies! You might even have some of the items you need already lying around the house. You can use anything small that has a Christmas theme, or is red or green!

Christmas Sort is Super Easy to Set-Up

Once you have all your items to sort you need to mix them all up. Use a gift bag or simply dump them next to the platter you are sorting into.

For younger children, it helps to start sorting with them so they have examples in the sections of what they are sorting. Also, keeping the number of sorting items small at first. This will help them master the concept without frustration.

You can then add more items to sort as the child gains confidence in the activity and their skills.

If you want to make a game to use over and over again, write with a Sharpie what goes in each section. Or you could even glue a picture onto the section.

So you have everything all set up and the kids are busy sorting their items. That’s it! An easy and simple Christmas sorting activity that your kiddos will enjoy doing.

Easy Christmas Classroom Party Game – Christmas Catch

Christmas Classroom Party Game

If you are looking for a fun and quick Christmas classroom party game then this is it!

This Christmas Catch game is easy to make using supplies you can typically find at your local Dollar Tree. Or, you might even have some of the items already in your home.

You can play this game using only a divided platter, jingle bells, bows, and pom-poms. This is all you need to create & play Christmas Catch!

As a bonus, not only is this game perfect as a Christmas classroom party game, but it’s a fun classroom math game too.

Keep reading below to learn how to create and play the game.

Christmas Catch for the Win

With two boys in school, the classroom parties are a constant in our home. This game came about after forgetting to sign up for napkins or cookies, you know, the easy ones, and party games were the only item left to contribute.

Perhaps you are in the same boat and need a fun Christmas classroom party game. This game is adaptable for any age, but the best part is that older kids will have never seen it before.

It seems that as children get further along in school, they are pretty much BINGO’D out.

So the task is to find something new & unique; that is easy to create; easy on the budget; & easy on you and the teacher.

Trust me, a teacher doesn’t want to be vacuuming up the exploding glitter poppers you created. Especially when all of her fellow teachers are peeling out of the parking lot chanting “freedom”!

We have another fun STEM Activity that would be great to use at your Christmas Party too. Check out our Spice Drop STEM Activity and you’ll have two fun games to wow the classroom!

A frugal Christmas Classroom Party Game

In the dishes section at Dollar Tree, they have these red, divided platters. The platters made me think about doing some type of game where the kids could throw items and see if they could get them to stay.

I went to the Christmas section to pick up green and red pom-poms, small jingle bells, and bows as items for the kids to toss.

After some trial and error, it seemed that the items didn’t bounce around like envisioned. So the game was tweaked a bit and the idea to have addition and subtraction “sections” was added.

Christmas Catch Game

The goal of the game is to have the addition sections “catch” or keep the items. But the kids want to try and avoid the subtraction sections.

This way if all the items stayed in, there would still be some skill in trying to avoid the subtraction sections. That is the goal of Christmas Catch – to have the highest score when you run out of items to throw.

How to Play the Christmas Classroom Party Game

Separate the kids into teams with no more than 6 children per platter. You can use Christmas names to organize them such as Team Santa or Team Jingle Bells. If you have a larger class, you can use all the reindeer names.

Have the “toss” items (jingle bells, pom-poms, small bows & large bows) in individual ziplock bags in a container for each team.

Start with one item, let’s say jingle bells, and each child takes 3 out of the bag.

Make sure the children aren’t standing too close to the platter. About a wrapping paper tube length away works great.

At the same time, have all the teams toss their bells. Remind them the goal of “Christmas Catch” is for the bells to land in the addition spots, not in the subtraction spots.

Decide before you begin if you are going to let them re-throw items that fall out of the platter. To speed up the game, we played once you throw it, it’s done.

After they toss, the children will need to work together to figure out their score. The score can then go on a Tally Board.

Now, you will repeat the above steps throwing the other items. Finalize the score and see which team has won bragging rights!

Easy “Christmas Catch” Party Game Creation

The first step is deciding and writing the numbers on the platters. If younger children, like first or second graders, are playing you will want to use smaller numbers. Older children in upper elementary will be able to do the math with higher number variations.

Using a sharpie works best to write on the plastic and it only takes a few seconds. Stickers are options, but they are a nice Christmas touch.

Next, you will need to Sort the items into smaller bags for each team. You can put each toss item into a small ziplock and put all the bags into one container for each team. That way you can set the platters and the containers the kids will need together at the party.

This was a great time saver during the party!

Bagged Christmas Supplies for Christmas Classroom Party Game

Finally, you will need a large tally sheet. Foam board works well, but you could always use the chalkboard or just keep track on a piece of paper.

Tally Board for Christmas Classroom Party Game

That’s it! You’ve just made the Christmas Catch game!

Supplies Needed for “Christmas Catch” Party Game

If you don’t have a Dollar Tree near you, most of the supplies can easily be found on Amazon. Here is a set of divided platters, not as frugal as the Dollar Tree, but they would work if you want to create the game.

Other items include:

Tiny Colorful Jingle Bells

Christmas Tinsel Pom Poms

One Inch Christmas Bows

Large Christmas Bows

You will also want to make sure you have a Sharpie to write on the platters, as well as foam board for the tally sheet.

You can use fun Christmas stickers to make the platters more festive if you’d like.

Star Wars Elf on the Shelf Storm Trooper

Our Elf Went to the Dark Side

Our Elf on the Shelf turned to the Dark Side! Check out our Elf's Star Wars night that can be used to amaze your own Star Wars fan! Quick & Easy!

Our Elf on the Shelf is super excited about the release of the new Star Wars movie this weekend! My boys love Star Wars so this isn’t the first time our Elf has interacted with our Star Wars toys. However, this is the first time our Elf wore a mask! You can find the printable mask here at Enza’s Bargains. She not only has the Stormtrooper mask you see in the photo, but Darth Vader and Darth Maul masks too! The best part… they are free and there are no strings attached. You know what I mean – no signing up for an email list or jumping through burning hoops to actually get the “free” mask. Click on the actual picture of the 3 masks, hit print & cut them out in about 2 minutes!

Our Elf on the Shelf turned to the Dark Side! Check out our Elf's Star Wars night that can be used to amaze your own Star Wars fan! Quick & Easy!

I’m sure there are other ways to attach the mask that are more discreet, but I had tape handy and it wasn’t that obvious. My middle guy said, “Hey G (yes, our elf’s name is the letter G) used our tape for his mask!” and I rolled with it.

Preparing for Next Year

If you have read my Elf Survival Plan you know that I am all about being prepared and organized. So I actually went ahead and printed a few extra sets of the mask to put in my “Elf Box” – a box full of all my Elf props and supplies. This way I have the masks ready for next year!

Bonus Star Wars Idea!

This one is a classic, and by classic I mean I fall back on it every year (because sometimes Mom is busy). Our Elf takes on our Star Wars collection in an epic battle of light sabers and pom-poms aka snowballs. What I love about this Elf idea is that the boys typically play with the snowballs and Star Wars figures for the rest of the morning. So it’s not only a great Elf idea, but one that encourages engaged play. When they are playing well, there’s more time to be Productive!

Christmas Books for Kids

Home Alone: The Classic Illustrated Storybook

Home Alone book

The illustrations in this book are incredible and since the storyline is well-known, it’s nice to have those strong pictures to hold kids’ interest.

As far as Christmas Books go – this is my current favorite!

The best part is the book isn’t too wordy. My 6-year-old can stumble through it fairly quickly. In summary, in case you’ve never seen the movie, it’s about a young boy, Kevin, who is left at home alone and tackles the task of keeping two robbers from breaking into his home.

It’s Christmas, David!

It's Christmas David Book

Another fantastic Christmas book whose author, David Shannon, fills the entire page with colorful illustrations. Shannon lets his pictures do most of the storytelling and even with the words on each page being minimal, the pictures bring about great conversations.

David is your typical Christmas curious kid and this seems to mean he gets reminded to behave frequently. This book probably ranks high on my boys’ list because of the page where David is seen running in his birthday suit.

As I said, David is kind of mischievous.

Disney*Pixar Cars: Mater Saves Christmas

Mater Saves Christmas Book

This book is a classic for all the Disney Cars fans. In true Mater fashion, it is full of silly antics and even a trip to the North Pole!

When fuel thieves steal all the town’s gas, Mater realizes that the mail trucks won’t be able to deliver everyone’s letters to Santa. Mater heads to the North Pole to deliver the letters himself and winds up meeting & helping Santa Car!

How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas?

How Do Dinosaurs Say Merry Christmas Book

This is the perfect Christmas book for your dinosaur-loving kiddo. This book starts with “What would dinosaurs do” Christmas scenarios.

It has hilarious pictures of the dinosaurs misbehaving. For example, one page asks if dinosaurs would eat all of Santa’s cookies and then shows the dinosaur “chugging” them down from the plate.

The second half of the book is examples of the dinosaurs behaving much better. A great story that has hidden messages of good behavior at Christmas time.

The Night Before Christmas

The Night Before Christmas Book

This is a version of the classic The Night Before Christmas, but the illustrations take it to the next level.

Each page is so full of colorful drawings that my boys find something new and funny each time we read it. It’s the little details that make this book special.

The reindeer all wear distinctive hats, the Christmas tree has a hot dog ornament, and on one page Santa and his reindeer are taking pictures with an inflatable… Santa. The classic story combined with the unique illustrations makes this book a keeper.

Little Blue Truck’s Christmas

Little Blue Truck's Christmas Book

My youngest guy is a big fan of the Little Blue Truck series. If you’ve never read them, they are worth checking out.

This book follows the Little Blue Truck as he makes his Christmas tree deliveries. It uses rhymes and catchy wording perfect for toddlers and young preschoolers.

Bear Stays Up for Christmas

Bear Stays Up for Christmas Book

Bear’s friends wake him up this year for Christmas! He helps them prepare for Christmas morning, all while trying very hard not to fall asleep.

Eventually, his friends fall asleep, but Bear stays up and makes them all gifts. I love the lesson about “giving” and not just receiving in this book.

The Berenstain Bears Save Christmas

The Berenstain Bears Save Christmas

This book focuses on the true meaning of Christmas. It’s about remembering that it’s not the hustle and bustle that is important at Christmas but keeping the Christmas spirit alive.

Plus, it has those adorable bears from our childhood that I will forever love reading.

Click, Clack, Ho! Ho! Ho!

Click, Clack, Ho! Ho! Ho! Book

As Farmer Brown goes to bed he believes all is calm and well for Santa’s Christmas Eve arrival. However, Duck is trying to deliver a Christmas present and gets stuck in the chimney.

Soon all the helpful animals are stuck too and it takes Santa to finally help Duck deliver his special gift. Spoiler Alert – the present is the star for the top of the tree.

A Magical Christmas

A Magical Christmas Book

Little Mouse is trying to figure out the true magic of Christmas. He asks his family throughout the book and they all give him great answers that will help young children understand the importance of keeping Christmas Spirit in our hearts.

Pete the Cat Saves Christmas

Pete the Cat Saves Christmas Book

Santa is sick, so he has asked Pete the Cat to help deliver the presents on Christmas Eve. Pete does so in a red, mini-bus being pulled by reindeer.

I love the message in this book – that even if you are small and facing a daunting task, you keep trying your hardest.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas Book

This book is simply a must-have for your Christmas library. I love reading about how the Grinch comes to understand that “Christmas is more”. This is one of my favorite Christmas reads.

Mary Engelbreit’s The Night Before Christmas

The Night Before Christmas Book

Another version of The Night Before Christmas book, but they are all so unique!

This one has the classic illustrations Engelbreit is known for like whimsical scenes and enchanting illustrations.

Ninja Claus!

Ninja Claus! Book

This is a new book for my family and it has been a hit! Maxwell, who considers himself a ninja, is going to try his hardest to catch a glimpse of Santa this year.

He quickly learns that Santa is sneaky like a ninja himself. This book is set at night and it’s unique because for a Christmas book, it has very dark pages and a comic book set-up.

The Magic of Christmas – A Treasury of Holiday Stories

The Magic of Christmas Book

This is a collection of 4 adorable Christmas Stories:

I’ve Seen Santa by David Bedford

Careful, Santa! by Julie Sykes

Bless You, Santa! by Julie Sykes

The Gift of Christmas by Christine Leeson

The Pups Save Christmas

The Pups Save Christmas!

If you have a Paw Patrol fan in your home, then you probably could recite this book from memory because it follows the TV show episode of the same name.

That does not keep my little guy from wanting to read it, however. Quick recap: Ryder and his Pups help Santa find his reindeer, fix his sleigh, and deliver the presents.

Richard Scarry’s The Night Before the Night Before Christmas!

The Night Before the Night Before Christmas! Book

In this classic Scarry story, Santa heads out a night early to deliver the presents because Mr. Fumble accidentally ripped a page off Santa’s calendar.

There’s just something fun about a book where the main character is driving a ski-pickle-doo.

The Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Tree

The Berenstain Bears' Christmas Tree

Papa Bear is determined to find the perfect Christmas tree and he is not going to do it from a tree-lot.

The Bears slowly learn that the trees are the homes of their animal friends and they can not chop them down. Upon returning back to their treehouse, they see all the animals have decorated their treehouse for them.

Another story focusing on the Christmas Spirit!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Christmas 123

The Very Hungry Caterpillars Christmas 123 Book

This Christmas book is perfect for infants and young toddlers, but the illustrations are truly so unique that I could flip through it over and over again. My favorite is the Santa!

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition

The Elf on the Shelf Book

We read this book when our Elf returns every year. I have 3 copies of it, one for each of my boys. I have on my “ever-growing to-do list” to add pictures of our elf and his antics into each book.

How to Start a Memorable Christmas Book Tradition

Child's hand turning page in Christmas book

This Christmas Book Tradition is an easy, memorable tradition for your family.

Sometimes traditions go so far back in time that we have lost their beginnings. Sometimes we adapt and tweak them slightly as they pass through the generations.

Traditions may be long-standing customs, treasured like an invisible family heirloom; but they can also be created or started at any time.

This is how my family’s Christmas Book Tradition began.

How to Start a Christmas Book Tradition

A Simple Christmas Book Tradition

My family began this tradition because I heard about it from a friend.

During dinner one night she mentioned how her husband’s Godmother purchased him a Christmas book every single year.

Such a simple idea, which made it even more intriguing because I was pretty sure I could pull it off.

An Easy Christmas Book Tradition

I ended up tweaking the plan a little and decided that I would buy my boys a Christmas Book every year until they graduated High School.

There is no shame in admitting that I have sugar-plum visions of my sons nestled in front of their respective Christmas trees reading these books to their children.

My backup plan, in the case of daughters-in-law who don’t like long-standing family traditions (insert sarcasm), is that I will have an awesome Christmas library for the grandkids.

So if you’d rather, you can always keep these books at your home as cherished memories of Christmases past.

Personalizing your Christmas Book Tradition

If you are crazy short on time and life is becoming beyond manageable, order a Christmas book on Amazon and check “buy new Christmas book” off the to-do list. You are all done!

Yes, this tradition can be that easy!

However, if you do want to personalize your child’s book every year, here are a few things you can do to make it just a little bit more special.

How to Start a Christmas Book Tradition

Simple Personalization Ideas for Your Christmas Book Tradition

An easy way to personalize the book is to record the year and child’s age. Simply write something like “Merry 5th Christmas Rudolph – Love,  Dad & Mom” in front of the book.

Of course, you can write anything your heart desires! Maybe memories from that year or milestones that your child achieved.

Another idea would be to attach your yearly Christmas Card to the front of the book. Write a small message under it and you now have a photograph, plus a special message.

Even more Christmas Book Personalization Ideas

Now this is where I stop with personalizing the books, but there are numerous other options.

You could put photos of your child from that year’s Christmas in the front or back of the book. Also, you could ask family members to write a note to your child.

Maybe your child could write something in the book. When my boys are older, I am going to try to implement this idea. I still need to brainstorm on what they will write about and how to convince teenagers of the importance of family traditions.

Fun Ways to Gift the Christmas Books

You can keep it simple and give your child the book while you set up for Christmas. Maybe include it with a fun pair of Christmas pajamas!

Another idea would be to have your Elf on the Shelf bring the book. Or St. Nick could bring them on St. Nick’s Day.

Perhaps the books are just sitting under the tree one morning as a fun surprise.

The easy thing about this tradition is that it doesn’t have to be difficult and time-consuming. Also, it’s great to have new Christmas books to put in the reading rotation.

Start a Christmas Book Tradition EVEN if your children are older

So if you love this Christmas Book Tradition idea, but you have the realization that:

My child is 4… I’ve already missed out on this and can’t do it.

Not true. It is still doable – I promise! This tradition started for my family when my oldest was having his THIRD Christmas.

You can still frugally pull this off if you have a few Christmas books in the house.

If not, there’s always Amazon! Or check out my list of 20 Children’s Christmas Books for book ideas that are favorites in my home.

Christmas Books for Kids

So grab those Christmas Books and record the years that you missed.

If you are feeling ambitious, print a few pics from that year to tape in there too. That easily, you are now caught up!

Have fun creating your new Christmas Book Tradition!

These are examples of nights our elf, whose name is G by the way, almost didn’t move because I almost forgot about him.

My boys can be pretty forgiving if Elf G is just hanging out in a new spot the next morning. However, two mornings in a row and their eyes just don’t shine like they would if he had been zip-lining across our living room.

That’s why having an easy plan makes surviving Elf Season so much easier!

Why an Elf Survival Plan?

Most nights our Elf is mischievous or creative – because I remember him and still have energy when the last child is finally asleep.

Then there are the nights he simply moves to a new spot, perfectly content to just chill on the back of the toilet, hang onto a ceiling fan, or take a ride on a fire truck.

All perfectly acceptable Elf Things, just not super creative.

After enough mornings of my kids looking a little sad, the realization hit that a better plan for Elf G‘s evening adventures was needed.

Especially as my boys have gotten older! The “wow” factor needed to be considered after my boys are on year 5 of Elf antics.

After several years of winging it, I figured out a way for me to survive the month of December with an Elf in my home. Hopefully some of these ideas can help you survive it too.

The First Step in the Elf Survival Plan

I fall into the category of those who love the concept of the Elf, except for those nights when my eyes are almost closing and I realize that the little red guy hasn’t moved yet.

Out of bed the tired Mom springs to frantically search Pinterest for the easiest/quickest/simplest yet still fun elf antics she can find. Then begins the process of searching for “props” to pull off that midnight elf escapade.

At the beginning of our Elf tradition, this was me nightly.

Some nights this is still me because life is crazy.

However, I’ve fine-tuned my Elf Survival Plan and things typically run much smoother now.

#1 Remembering the ELF

One way to avoid the dreaded getting back out of bed scenario is by putting move the elf on your daily To-Do List App or Calendar. You can see an example above.

Of course there are other, easy ways for you to remember to move your Elf!

Ways to Remember to Move your Elf

  • Use a To-Do App on your phone
  • Set a phone reminder for at least an hour before your bedtime
  • Have a friend who struggles with Elf Survival? Text each other nightly reminders! You’ll probably be able to snag some fun ideas from them too!
  • Write it in your planner
  • Place a sticky note somewhere you will see it every night – by your toothbrush, by the coffee pot if you prep it the night before, etc.  Be aware of kids learning the word ELF. – Possibly writing #supermom on the sticky note will be a good reminder to not only move the elf but that you are an awesome mom since you are committed to this Elf thing!

The Second Step in the Elf Survival Plan

Once you have a plan for the first step of Elf Survival – REMEMBERING THE ELF – you need a solid plan for execution.

Not execution of the Elf… but of your plan.

Nothing zaps away those feelings of accomplishment at remembering to move the Elf, then skimming through Pinterest and realizing you have nothing “super cool” to use.

Your Elf might be ready to go fishing in the toilet, but you don’t have any goldfish.

Or you can’t grab your kids’ underwear so your Elf can decorate the tree with it because their drawer squeaks so bad it could wake the dead.

Putting the kids to bed and scanning Pinterest can lead to finding great ideas, but you might not have the things you need to pull it off.

So while you have all these amazing ideas, you aren’t prepared for the execution.

#2 Creating an Elf To-Do List/Cheat Sheet

So the second step is to create an Elf To Do List or Cheat Sheet. There are several ways to create this as well.

First, you could store it in your Planner or Christmas Binder.

Also, you could type it up in the notes section on your phone.

The below list was done over a few afternoons sitting in the school pick-up line by simply looking at Pinterest.

Creating an Elf Cheat Sheet

First, find a place to record all of the amazing things you are hoping for your elf to do. Some places include:

  • Notes section in your phone
  • Envelope you found on your car’s floor
  • In your planner
  • Piece of notebook paper
  • Document on your laptop/computer
  • Christmas Planner

Now you will need to search for Elf on the Shelf ideas. Typically, a simple Pinterest or Google search can provide you with tons of them.

Finally, write down all the ideas you love and that will work for your family.

The Third Step of the Elf Survival Plan

When you feel like you have a good list put together, simply go through it and make a note of what you have on hand.

You’ll also want to write down what you need to buy or find to create those magical Elf moments.

If you are still stuck with finding ideas, make sure you check out our Elf on the Shelf Accessories & Clothes Guide.

#3 Gather all your Supplies

So when it’s been a crazy night of practices, homework, and Christmas concerts, you will be ready with all your supplies.

Again, once you have a good list of ideas going, make sure you organize – make, buy or find – the items you will need.

Elf Survival Plan – The Last Step

We are almost done. This step is actually the easiest; I promise!

Once you have all the Elf outfits and props you need to put them in one place. This part seems simple and skippable, but it is so important.

#4 Organize the Elf Accessories

There’s no point in buying an item and then not being able to locate it when you really need it.

This advice is from someone who has searched late at night through numerous Amazon boxes for a hot-coco mug the size of a quarter.

This box is like the Elf’s little apartment in your home. A secret place, full of his outfits & accessories.

If you worry your kids might find the Elf Apartment, we have a solution for that.

If they do stumble upon it, tell them that Santa sends it the first night the Elf arrives so that he doesn’t have to carry all the stuff in the cold & snowy North Pole weather.

Now, decide if you are going to add the food or candy items to your Elf’s box. I personally hold off on the food and candy treats, but our Elf box is stored in our cold garage.

The best part about this is that every year your Elf box will have more and more options.

Those sparkly pom-poms surrounding the monster trucks, well they have worked well for snowball fights and general destruction by your Elf.

How to Rock the Elf on the Shelf this Christmas

So that is pretty much the Elf Survival Plan!

As a recap of the plan:

  1. Find a way to REMIND yourself to REMEMBER the Elf
  2. Create a CHEAT SHEET of fun ideas
  3. GATHER, FIND or BUY all the things you will need
  4. Finally, place everything in the ELF APARTMENT

Also, don’t forget about our other helpful Elf articles! Make sure you print out your free Elf on the Shelf Calendar & take a peek at our Elf Accessories Guide.

Hopefully having a plan for your Elf will help you, as it did me, enjoy the Elf on the Shelf a little more this Christmas.

Miscellaneous

First Post…

Welcome to Productive Pete. My own little piece of the big internet world to share all the ways that I attempt to organize my life, in order to have time for the “good stuff” – all that inspires & brings joy. In this fast-paced world, I still strive to give my kids a magical – safe – exciting – healthy – imaginative childhood. I quickly learned that to accomplish this, a certain level of planning & organizing would have to occur. For me, going throughout my day without a plan leads to complete chaos. This chaos means there is less time in the day for the “good stuff” I truly wish to be doing.

I’ve had a tendency to categorize and organize since I was young. I would spend hours sorting my sticker sheets by themes (think – Lisa Frank or not Lisa Frank) or redoing my baseball card collection. In high school I loved when I had a new planner to decorate and update.  Along with my love of organizing, I have also been infatuated with photography.  I enjoy taking photos of anything from landscapes to animals to my friends and family. It really doesn’t matter the subject, I have always enjoyed taking photos of everything. Along with my need to organize and a love of photography, a creative streak exists within me too. While none of my crafting skills are to an advanced level, I have dabbled in crochet, taught myself how to (badly) hem my son’s pants and love a good DIY project. Since having my kids the creative options I can do with them, and for them, is endless.

Are you seeing how Productive Pete came to be my brain child? I will have the chance to combine three things that I not only love, but help me survive this crazy life! One day I will be sharing organizational tips that have been lifesavers for me and the next day I can show “kind-of nailed it” projects from Pinterest. All the while documenting the journey not only through words, but through pictures as well. Productive Pete is my trifecta!

I’ve created Productive Pete with a simple desire to share what I love – how to get organized so that there is more time for the important stuff. I’ll admit, sharing about good food, tips & tricks to raising kids, and all the fun stuff that makes getting life’s daily chores done worth it, will probably be more fun than sharing how to get organized. But for me, if I don’t have the organization, I do not have the time for the creative.
